On 26 February Proud Manta 2012 successfully concluded. NATO’s largest annual anti-submarine warfare exercise took place in the Ionian Sea to the southeast of Sicily. Forces were provided by Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The Operations Room is the nerve centre of a ship. It contains equipment for monitoring and controlling electronic warfare, fire control, sonar, radar – the full spectrum of detection and analytical sensors. Under the distinctive red-colored lighting, there is constant activity that continues 24/7 while the ship is sailing. It's here, in the ops room of HMCS Charlottetown – over continuous crackle of the radio and flicker of radar screens – that sailors participate in NATO's largest Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) exercise.
As Proud Manta 2012 evolves the submarines, surface vessels and maritime patrol aircraft involved in this anti-submarine warfare exercise find their role as hunter can quickly become that of the prey. The submarines have a lot of advantages but the waters of the Ionian Sea can sometimes be more revealing than the commanders would like especially when there is a Canadian CP140 Aurora swooping low above searching for that tell-tale outline.

During the night between the 13 and 14 February, five NATO submarines slipped their moorings and disappeared into the winter waters off Sicily. At the same time 12 surface vessels steamed out to the exercise area to begin a complex game of cat and mouse which will last until 24 February. Proud Manta 12, NATO's largest annual anti-submarine exercise, is underway.
From 14-26 February 2012, eleven NATO nations will provide 5 submarines, 15 aircraft (including shore and ship based helos) and 12 surface ships (including 2 Auxiliary ships from Italy and 1 NATO Research Vessel) to take part in PROUD MANTA 12, NATO’s largest Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) exercise.
